Dog Grooming : How to Groom a Shih Tzu

Big Admin April 22, 2018 17

To groom a shih tzu dog, carefully shave in between the eyes, leave the head longer than the rest of the body, keep the ears long and trimmed at the tips, and make sure the feet are clipped…

i've been a groomer for over ten years. My favorite haircut on a shih-tzu (if the owner wants a summer cut but not too short) is a #4 or #5 kennel cut with a cute TB head (make sure the length is the same on top as it is on the beard). Never EVER shave the tail unless severely matted. Just take about an inch off the end, then "half-moon" the tail (groomer's should know what this means). Bob the ears if the owner ask you too. Remember, ALWAYS listen to what the owner wants or give good advice.

If you're not supposed to use a #40, what do you use? #10?

Seriously a #40…. only if you want to clipper burn that dog. #10 or #15 is what you need to use.

@ellietobe Dogs get hot in the summer too, shaving them down is a good way to help keep them cool. Some people dont like the upkeep of long hair on their dogs. Its the owners preference. If you dont like the cut then thats your opinion, there is no right or wrong style.
